Raw mango(mavidikaya pappu) dal

Raw mango(mavidikaya pappu) dal is prepared with Toor(Yellow split lentils) dal and raw mango seasoned with Indian herbs.It is a delicious,naturally tangy and flavorful.

Makes 4

Ingredients:
3/4 cup Toor dal(yellow split lentils)
1 medium size raw green mango (wash ,peel the skin and roughly chop mango into small bite size chunks.set aside)
3 Green Chilies chopped
1 tsp finely chopped garlic
few curry leaves
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp ghee
salt to taste
1/2 tsp red chili powder

For Seasoning:
1/2 tsp black mustard seeds
1/2 tsp urad dal
pinch of hing
1 dry red chili

Step 1:Procedure for cooking dal:
-Place a pressure cooker on a medium heat and dry roast the lentils on a medium flame for 5 mins.
-Then add 1 and 3/4 cup of water,roughly chopped raw mango,green chilies and cook for 3-4 whistles in a pressure cooker.Turn off the stove.Allow the pressure to release naturally and set aside.

Step 2: Procedure for seasoning dal:
1)Heat ghee in a pan on a medium flame add all the seasoning allow them to splutter and then garlic fry for few secs .
2)Then Add cooked dal (from step 1), turmeric,red chili powder,salt to taste & curry leaves.
3)Mix thoroughly and bring to a boil simmer for few mins.Turn off the stove.Serve hot with steamed rice,ghee and curd chilies.

    Wow, great use of Mango in everyday cooking recipes! I like to add little bit of Jaggery to it for sweet and sour flavor…

        Yeah,I know many people who prefer Dal without any sweetener added , but I thought Raw mango and Jaggery could complement each other, wouldn’t it be too tangy in taste without any sweetner???

      2. If it is too tangy we add little more cooked dal or less raw mango.That’s why ratio to dal and mango are important for this recipe.
