Modak

Modak (Jilledu kayalu) is a sweet dumpling with filled with Coconut/Sugar (kobbari laskora) or Sesame Seed Powder/ Jaggery (Chimmili).

Modaks are one of Ganeshji’s favorite recipes, and we usually make them at home for Ganesh Chaturthi. It is a simple and delicious dish with natural ingredients. If you are not a big fan of sugar or would rather avoid it, the Jaggery and coconut filling is equally delicious.

Makes 10 Modaks

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup- Rice 
  • 2 tablespoons-Oil
  • Half cup-Water

For the Filling:

Coconut/Sugar (Kobbari Laskora)

  • 1 Cup-Grated Coconut 
  • 1 Cup-Sugar

Sesame Seed Powder/Jaggery (Chimmili):

  • 1 Cup-Sesame Seeds
  • 1/2 Cup-Jaggery

 For the Homemade rice flour:

  • Soak 1 cup of rice overnight , drain the water and place the rice on a paper towel to remove the excess water for 15 minutes.
  • Grind the rice to a fine powder and keep it aside.

Procedure:
      Coconut/Sugar Mixture (Kobbari Laskora)

  • Place a pan on low flame, add 1 cup of grated coconut and mix the for a couple of minutes 
  • Add 1/2 – 1 cup of sugar (according to taste) to the grated coconut and mix until desired consistency is achieved. You will know when the sugar dissolves and the mixture coagulates. Sprinkle a few drops of water if the mixture appears to be drying out.
  • Cool the mixture and make elliptical balls .

  Sesame Seeds/Jaggery Mixture (Chimmili)

  • Fry one cup of sesame seeds in a pan until they are light brown.
  • Grind the fried sesame seeds in a mixer, and then add some grated jaggery
  • Grind the mixture until it coagulates as comes together as a ball.
  • Make elliptical balls from the mixture.

Modak (Jilludu Kayalu)

  •  In another pan boil the water with 1 teaspoon of oil .Reduce the flame,add the homemade rice flour and stir continuously to ensure that no lumps are formed.
  • Grease your palms with oil, pick some dough and flatten it with your hand
  •  Place the coconut mixture/sesame seed mixture in the flattened dough, and close it.  
  • Press it with your hand and place it in a mould to give a nice shape.
  • Place the Modak in the steamer or Idli cooker for 5 min in a low flame.
  • Tasty Modaks are ready to serve.
